The introduction of psychopharmacology in Psychiatry revolutionized the field.
In 1953 with the discovery of chloropromazine psychiatrists managed to deal with psychosis’ that up to that point were dealt either with electroshock, psychosurgery or with long-term restraints (strait-jackets) and commitment to psychiatric clinics.
Since then psychopharmacology has made leaps in evolution. Over the last years, new molecules are discovered annually and are added to the enormous arsenal already in the disposal of the modern psychiatrist.
At the same time the demands of the relatives of the mental patient also increase. For a schizophrenic today not only is it considered unthinkable to be committed to a psychiatric clinic for several months, but it is also expected to be fully integrated in society.
For the mentally-ill integration in a working place and starting a family are feasible, under certain conditions.

Psychodiagnostics
Today someone goes to a Mental Health expert, either psychiatrist or psychologist, because he experiences a psychological impasse, torturing enough, to prevent him from functioning as a person.
Often physical symptoms coexist, for which doctors of various specialties cannot identify something pathological.
At this point the expert is called to listen attentively to the patient and what is troubling him.An adequate medical background is necessary, as it is imperative to establish a therapeutic relation that will then function beneficially for the patient himself.
Proper diagnosis is the most important task that has to be done before anyone proceeds to any kind of therapeutic intervention.Because if this does not happen, there is a danger for the psychiatrist to prescribe the wrong pharmaceutical treatment with any negative consequences involved. The psychologist on the other hand should at least be in a position to diagnose who is in need of psychiatric attendance and who is not, and should not hesitate to direct him appropriately.
There are psychopathologic manifestations that psychotherapeutic intervention is sufficient. There are others dealt with only psychopharmacology. But quite often besides a proper pharmacological treatment psychotherapeutic support is necessary.
On these cases the establishment of collaboration between the experts, to maximize benefit for the patient, is necessary. This presupposes a mutual recognition concerning the morals and the prestige between the experts, as well as for the reciprocal estimate with regard to their professional sufficiency and experience.
